Depression

Depression is marked by profound and enduring sadness that disrupts daily life. It can lead to difficulties in performing basic tasks, loss of interest in once-enjoyed activities, and is most commonly seen in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), affecting around 25% of Canadians during their lifetime.

Common Symptoms

  • poor concentration 

  • tiredness /fatigue 

  • loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed

  • disturbances in sleep or sleeping too much

  • increase in fidgeting or pacing or slowed movements and speech

  • persistent sadness or lack of interest 

  • loss of sexual desire 

  • weight loss or weight gain

  • feelings of worthlessness or guilt 

  • thoughts of death or suicide

Available Treatments

One of the most common types of treatment for depression is psychotherapy. There are many different types of psychotherapies which focus on areas such as alternating negative thought patterns, identifying triggers and responses, and learning new ways to cope and manage our symptoms.

Psychotherapies such as CBT, EMDR, and Narrative therapy have research to support their efficacy in treating depression.
